Light Wrap Fantastic 1.0

Compositing light for digitally keyed elements By Ko Maruyama
Digital Anarchy recently announced the release of The Light Wrap Fantastic, a plugin that assists with green/blue screen compositing.  Available for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Apple's Final Cut Pro, the plugin makes it easier to blend foreground and background elements by simulating rear-projected light and ambient light values with glows.

This type of compositing tool applies a finishing touch that allows elements to share the same color and lighting values with the backplates (scenes) behind them.  When beginner compositors or editors marry greenscreen or blue screen plates with a background image, they may be able to remove all of the color channel to isolate the foreground image, but the ability to have the isolated element share illumination characteristics with the background is usually more complex than simply laying one element on top of another.

The Light Wrap Fantastic plugin seeks to help compositors (whether they're using a compositing tool like Adobe's After Effects, or an editorial software tool like Premiere Pro or Apple's Final Cut Pro).  By giving you simple tools to bring certain light values from the background, and allowing them to wrap around the foreground, the plugin helps you get a more realistic composite.

One particularly common composite that we've seen recently is the mobile device with a hand above it, controlling the surface with gestures.

Mobile devices light the operator's hand from behind.  A subtle light warp around the controlling hand makes the composite seem more natural.

"We've seen a lot of requests for a standalone Light Wrap plugin. Most editing apps have keying, but not Light Wrap.", said Jim Tierney, President of Digital Anarchy. "It's a subtle effect but it can make a huge difference in selling a green/blue screen shot. It's built into our green screen plug-in so it was easy to break it out, perfect it and turn it into a separate plugin."

Creating convincing green/blue screen composites has always been a challenge. The Light Wrap Fantastic enables better composites by easily allowing users to blend the background with the foreground in such a way that it appears the light of the background is affecting the foreground. The plugin has all the controls you need to create a realistic light wrap making it a quick and easy process.

It fits right into your existing pipeline in multiple host applications.

GPU acceleration allows the plugin to render HD and 4K footage quickly. It easily fits into whatever workflow you use when compositing with a variety of options and modes. This flexibility and speed make it the perfect choice for visual effects artists that need better compositing and don't want to purchase an expensive package with tools they don't need.

Features of The Light Wrap Fantastic:
    - Easy compositing of green/blue screen or masked images on a background
    - Control every aspect of the light wrap within one plugin
    - Fast Rendering using Your GPU
    - Different modes for different workflows
    - Use built-in masks to control where the light wrap appears
    - Works with all keying software: Keylight, UltraKey, Ultimatte, Primatte and more.
    - Standalone plugin, no need to buy an expensive package with tools you don't need

The Light Wrap Fantastic 1.0 supports Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and  Apple's Final Cut Pro X. Support for other host applications like Avid and Davinci Resolve are planned soon.
